Consider these factors before making this big (and important) decision for every homeowner.
Age of the system – If your AC system is less than 10-12 years old, still under warranty and has a high efficiency rating, consider having it repaired. If the system is older than 10-12 years, it’s probably less efficient and utilizing toxic refrigerants, so replacing it is probably your best bet.
Frequency of breakdowns – If you have had less than two repairs in the last 10 years, it might be best to have the AC system repaired. More than two repairs in the last 10 years, think about having it replaced.
Extent of issues – Minor issues like faulty ductwork, a clogged drain line or an electrical could be dealt with by having them repaired. But extensive issues like blower motor, compressor or condenser coil problems indicate that having it replaced is the smarter thing to do.
Cost of Repairs – If the cost to repair your current AC system is less than 50% of the price of a new system, perhaps have it inspected, fixed and check if it is still covered under any warranty. If repair costs are more than 50% of having a new AC system installed, then you should opt to get a new system.
Energy efficiency – If your AC system has ratings of more than 13 SEER or 10 EER, it has a relatively high efficiency rating and may be worth repairing. If it has ratings lower than 13 SEER and 10 EER, you should opt for a new model with higher ratings to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
While the initial cost of installing a new central AC system may seem high, the long-term benefits and savings will ultimately pay off over time. You may be able to take advantage of energy rebates and incentives from local government agencies to help offset the initial cost. It’s also a great investment in your home as potential home buyers are willing to pay more for a home with an updated, efficient cooling system.
